Calling all Homeschoolers!

I know that at least a few of my readers are homeschooling mamas and I need some help from those lovely ladies.  I am writing a paper about education in Germany for one of my courses and part of the paper will discuss the ban on homeschooling in this country. Since I have to compare education in the U.S to education in Germany, I am really interested in the perspectives of some homeschoolers from the U.S.to generate ideas about reasons why German parents might want to home school as well.

Would you share your top 3 reasons for educating your children at home?

Also, if you don't mind, can you tell me what state you live in and what legal regulations you have to be aware of/abide by in order to have permission to home school your children?

If you prefer to email me instead of leaving a comment you can contact me at kwright626@yahoo.com

I know you are busy, but I would love to hear from you!!! (Even if you can refer me to your own blog as I know a lot of homeschooling moms have blogs that discuss what their reasons are).

Thanks a bundle!

Wow...I can't believe homeschooling is banned in Germany! I mean certainly you want to have some regulations about it, but I can't imagine banning it completely. I'd be interested to hear the "reasoning" for this...

Our reasons for homeschooling vary each year!

Right now I would say primarily my reasons for homeschooling are:

1.) Lifestyle: We aren't tied to a school schedule and we can travel w/ our kids and integrate our learning into all things we do as a family. We also value and appreciate the opportunity to tailor our children's education to their individual learning styles.

2.) I believe it is important to shelter your children from certain outside influences when they are very young. I can best do this through homeschooling.

3.) Infertility. I know what a blessing it is to have these children and I cannot imagine not being with them. I just enjoy spending the majority of my time with them and being their teacher and their mother.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions! What a great topic to write about.

Just read your comment on my blog. When it comes to "good fats" it's mainly the unsaturated fats found in nuts, seeds, and oils. You should get about 6-8 tsp of these oils each day (don't go on a low low fat diet, not good!). 1 T of peanut butter counts as 3 t of oil (in case you were wondering). The fat in your Greek yogurt is probably mainly saturated fat, which is OK in moderation. I would still eat it, as I'm sure you don't eat a lot of full fat dairy or fatty meats. So I think it's something you should definitely eat. But in the meantime, focus on getting plenty healthy oils, nuts, seeds, and yes, avocado!

I would love to see a follow up post on what kind of responses you get! As a teacher myself, I sometimes wonder if I would choose to homeschool my children. I see so many pros and cons and would like more insight!

From what I've read (here's one short example: http://german-way.com/blog/2009/02/03/homeschooling-verboten/) and been told, the German government considers it their responsibility to educate children. And not only through primary and secondary school, but university as well, hence the reason university students pay only a small fee (about 1000 Euros a year) for their education.
