Ahhhh (a big sigh of relief)

By no means is the stress entirely over because I got a new student on Friday, am getting another new student tomorrow, and I have parent teacher conferences for 43 families this week, BUT, I just emailed off my last big paper of Winter term and I am really, really happy about that. I still have to do a presentation of my research findings on Thursday, but it only has to be 12-15 minutes long and that is the ONLY academic task that I have left this term. Woo hoo! This last paper took a long time to really figure out and I am so happy it is finally done. I also completed the draft of my core paper done on Saturday during the "writing retreat" at my class. The core paper is a 30-35 comprehensive paper that applies the four "core" doctoral courses to an area of interest in education. Once my advisers approve the paper, I will have to defend it, which is pretty intense, but I am so excited to complete that first major doctoral hurdle! I am still playing catch up with my colleagues since I was in Germany last year, and my crazy busy course load is due to that. Several of my cohort members have already successfully presented and defended their core papers, so my goal is to do that at some point during spring term!

The final countdown is on and I get to see Mr. Sneaker on Saturday! We get to enjoy a whole week together and that makes me even happier than turning in my last paper of the term! We only have three days with students this week, then training and conferences on Thursday, and a half day of training on Friday. I am really excited for Friday afternoon when I am getting in my car and driving away from school at noon! I will have more than 24 hours of purely blissful me time before hubs arrives and I don't even know what to do with myself! There are so many possibilities and I can't even remember the last time I was able to just enjoy my time without homework and reading hanging over my head.

If you had 24 hours to yourself, what would you do?

Exhausted!

Whew. Today was quite a day. I had training from 10-3, which allowed me to sleep a little bit later than usual and get some errands done in the morning. I felt somewhat weird being out and about in the real world while my kiddos were with a sub. Even though I had a training, I kept thinking, what if I run into a parent...will they think I am playing hookie? One time when I had this same training, I went to the gym in the morning and it just felt too weird. Today I picked up a prescription, mailed a bday gift to my dad, and picked up my dry cleaning that I dropped off two weeks ago....better late than never.

Training was good, yet the group seem a bit unenthused. Well, I take that back. Part of the group is passionate and very vocal about the issues we discuss and the other part doesn't want to be there. It's pretty obvious when I look around that there are people who are not invested in the work and that makes me sad. I am really into it and I think it's really important, but since the outset the size of the group has continued to get smaller and smaller and people sneak out before the training actually ends. It makes the whole experience have a bit of a sour taste....

After the training, I stopped at the grocery store because my math lesson tomorrow has me teaching my kiddos how to divide (don't ask me why, I have no idea why that skill is taught in Kindergarten!).... so I needed to pick up real crackers so I have some semblance of a prayer of actually making that lesson clear to the kiddos. If they have to figure out how to divide 12 crackers among 4 people, then they need actual crackers to divide out so they can visually see how to do it and move the crackers around. I just spent the last 20 minutes counting out sets of 12 crackers and putting them in snack baggies.

That was a stretch for my brain to handle considering I had two presentations in class tonight and I feel totally wiped out and ready for a LONG rest. My first presentation was to share with my group a synopsis of the article that I wrote that I will try to get published once I make revisions based on their feedback from my presentation. Our goal for that particular class is to get an article published so I wrote mine about tweaking scripted curriculum to make it more culturally responsive. The presentation went really well and I got great feedback from both my teacher and the other people in the class.

After that, I had another presentation in my Organizational Leadership class, but I had to wait for 6 other people to present before me. I was already feeling mentally tapped out, but getting a rubric from the teacher that completely did not at all match her (previously unclear) explanation of the assignment was frustrating and made me a bit underwhelmed with listening to presentation after presentation. I survived and am very happy to have the paper and both presentations behind me. Now, there are only two more academic tasks between me and spring break! She was smiling and nodding while I was talking so that seems good and I got good feedback from the class as well.

I am so excited to be done with these courses and to have a week off during which time I get to spend time with my cute husband and relax a lot!

Things I am looking forward to:
1. Seeing Mr. Sneaker in 9 days!!!
2. Getting a pedi on Monday
3. Running 10 miles with my running peeps this weekend
4. getting into bed tonight and turning my brain OFF

Donezo

Whew...formal observation =donezo! The observation consisted of three parts; pre-meeting, being observed for 30 minutes (which turned out to be more like 40), and the post-meeting. Although my squirrely boys who have improved so much were not showing off the entire extent of their great improvements, I thought the lesson went really well. I was pleased and felt comfortable. Dare I say I kind of even forgot the principal was there....for a few brief moments.

Overall I know the kids are listening SO much better than a few of the other times she came in and I am feeling like things are going more smoothly on a daily basis (which is more important to me than the outcome of a single observation). When we chatted afterwards, she first asked to share my feelings on the lesson (what I thought went well and what I would do differently). I kind of just wanted to hear what she had to say, but I went through my feelings and gave some additional background info on the new behavior management system I have been using etc. Her input was good and the only piece that she really pointed out that might have needed some tweaking was my pacing in certain parts. She thought I went through one exercise too quickly and that I allowed too much time for the kids to write the sentence at the end of the lesson. Small things and I told her that I purposefully allowed more time for them to write because some of them take longer. She suggested another way to do it and I will try that out next time.

She told me she was very impressed with how polite and attentive the children were when the star of the week was sharing. He was finishing up when she came in to see the Fast Track Lesson. I have about 5-10 minutes a day of circle time which includes a greeting and time for the star of the week to share. I have been working with the kids on being good listeners, asking questions, and being respectful of the person who is having the turn to share/talk. We always thank the person who brought in something to share and make sure to look but not touch any special things they bring in to show. She said my hard work was evident and that made me really happy. I think there are a lot of important lessons taught in that brief time, but they are important ones-listening, asking questions, saying please and thank you, looking at the person who is talking etc. etc.

She also said that my hard work in the area of classroom management was evident as well. Whew! I am really glad she got to see that because I have been working hard and I definitely see and feel an improvement. Sometimes the kids are off when she comes in though (which is normal for any classroom and any teacher) and I was worried that she was getting to see the good things that are happening. She said she will do a formal write up of what she saw and I look forward to seeing that because our post observation chat was pretty brief.

I was pretty pleased that things went well so I signed out and went to get myself a latte during lunch. I never ever sign out and typically work through lunch everyday since I have a whole hour between AM and PM. I use all that time to grade, prep, clean up, get ready etc. Since I stepped out for coffee, I barely had time to eat, but I enjoyed every sip of that latte while I was teaching my PM kiddos. For some reason it feels really indulgent to have coffee while teaching and I loved treating myself since I worked hard for it :)

Tomorrow I have a training, so Jilly is subbing for me. The training doesn't start until 10 am because there is an evening portion as well with parents, so I get to sleep in tomorrow! Yay! I can't make the evening part because I have class, so I get a slightly shorter work day. Another yay! I can use that time in the morning to review my presentations for class since I have dos presentaciones mañana. I feel bad that I kind of left the room without really getting truly ready for Jill because I had an appt. at 3:00 and I had to be there at 2:45, so I pretty much left as soon as the kids were on the buses. She is such a rockin' sub that she could handle anything, but I like to be really prepared and organized and this time I just didn't get it together....

Oh, and I am getting another student on Friday in my afternoon class. That is the 6th new kiddo in that class this year. Whew. I look at my other students who came mid year and can't even imagine the class without them now, so I know everything will be fine. I just always stress at the thought of another child. The last one I got has some behavioral challenges so I always worry that one new child will totally change the dynamic of the class. I have three challenging boys already in the pm, so I am worried about getting any additional children with those same behavioral issues. The pm class has only 8 boys out of 20, yet most of them are pretty wiggly and need a lot of redirecting compared to the morning class, which has more boys, yet has a greater number of more mature boys who are really on task most of the time. Fingers crossed the new student is more like that! In any event, my numbers are still lower than the other classes, so I am not complaining. It was just tough when I was getting a new student almost weekly for awhile there....

Light at the End of the Tunnel

I need to get back into the blogging groove again, but my homework has kept me über busy recently. I have a paper due and two presentations on Wednesday and I finally finished up last night around 12:30 in the morning...ugh! I feel like I was inside all weekend doing work. I have been very stressed, but it feels good to have a stack of completed work and to know that there are only two weeks left of class and then I get a much needed break!

Things are going well in the classroom and hopefully that continues because I have a formal observation tomorrow. I am in a group of teachers who need to have one informal and one formal observation this year. I already had my informal and then another series of observations in January, so I kind of feel observationed out, but it is what it is. I got an email today indicating I need to have the observation done before March 31st and that it should be done during math time, but I asked if I could be observed during Fast Track Phonics instead. My principal had mentioned that she wants to see me teach a Fast Track lesson, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I signed up for tomorrow because this is something I would prefer to do sooner rather than later. This week is already stressful enough, so I might as well add just one more thing. I don't feel the same way about being observed as I used to because I get a little more nervous now since I have been observed so much in the past two months, but I recognize that it's an important part of improving myself. I have to do a short pre-observation talk with the principal and then we also will chat afterward. I SO hope that things go really well and she sees improvement from the last few times she came in. She does have high standards, but of course I want to meet them so fingers crossed! Sometimes I feel like anything that can go wrong does when she comes in (even though those things are not typical) so here's hoping for a GREAT day.

My last job for today is to finally finish Mockingjay for my book club tomorrow. I can't wait to find out what happens but I just couldn't bring myself to read it until my other school work was finished! Seems like a guilty pleasure even though it truly is something I need to do!

Happy Monday!

Baby

Not preggo in case you thought you were in for a treat with this post title.

It's actually in honor of my favorite moment of the day which involved my little friend Jamal singing Baby ala Justin Bieber as he did his morning work.

So cute!

If anything could make me get Bieber fever, it would have to be Jamal singing this tune....
