A little bit of fitness

Since summer is in full swing, I don't have too much teacher stuff to blog about, but I did name this blog sneakerteacher, so in the absence of good teacher talking, I am going to focus in on some fitness today.

If you have ever checked out my favorite workout DVD scroll on the lower left side of the blog, you will see that I love Tracy Anderson's ballet inspired workout. All you need is a mat and 2-3 pound hand weights and she gives you a workout that will change your figure for sure!

I have done all parts of the workout which includes a standing leg section, a mat leg section, a standing abs section and an arm section. I have to admit that I don't do the video in its entirety very often, but I fastforward to the arm section because it rocks!

Arms like this? Sign me up! I'll take the abs too!

Tracy is the exclusive trainer to Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

It is recommended to do the arm section 4-6 times a week which seems like a lot, but it is only 17 minutes from start to finish, so it's actually pretty reasonable. I have not done this video with that frequency just because I tend to get bored if I overdo a specific workout too many times, but I definitely love love love her stuff.
"Basically, it sculpts the small accessory muscles using high repetitions and light resistance, rather than bulking up large muscle groups."
If you are interested in giving it a try, purchase her video here.

The video I am referring to is the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout, but she also offers Dance Cardio and a Post Pregnancy Workout as well.

Crabby Patties

Have you ever seen the Spongebob show? He works at this place called the Crab Shack and they serve crabby patties. Well a crabby patty is my name for someone who is not being nice or is being crabby.

I often refer to my husband as a crabby patty and I, too can be a big one.

Well today, I had a long conversation with an extreme crabby patty. Without going into details I will just say that it was not pleasant. I do not consider myself a half glass full, rah rah kind of cheery person. I certainly know how to complain and I feel like I definitely keep it real when I talk about a given situation rather than only commenting on the "silver lining."

I do think though, there is a difference between a little complaining and bashing people by telling many consecutive stories about what a horrible person they are for approximately 45 minutes straight. Not nice! For all the times I have defended a little negativity as a healthy way to get things off my chest, I never want to be so negative that I make other people feel uncomfortable. Never ever!

Sometimes ultra happy people can be a little off putting to me, but it is certainly better to have an outlook on life and other people that reflects the good that you can find in them rather than the bad.

Going back to my frustrated post the other day about the girl in class who upset me because she did not do her reading and did not participate....I found out yesterday that she is hardcore Spicegirls fan and flew all the way to Vegas to see one of their reunion concerts. She talked about her obsession with the group in an animated and excited way and so it struck me, that everyone has good days and bad days, good moments and bad moments and this girl seems pretty nice...maybe just shy? It took talking about the Spicegirls to get her excited, but everyone has different things in life that excite them and get them interested in conversation. Although, yes, I was frustrated by her behavior, I want to say that I recognize she is not a bad person. Maybe she spread herself too thin with classes, maybe she is dealing with the stress of being laid off, maybe her health problems are getting in the way of a good night's sleep (yes I learned all of these things about her by talking to her and trying to get to know her a little better) and I found that I really sympathized with her and felt badly for judging her.

Here's to trying to be a little more rah-rah and a little less crabby patty!

What are your thought? Is it okay to complain or is it pointless? If you need to vent who do you call?

The first goodbyes...

Today after class I met up with my first grade team for lunch to celebrate my birthday. They got me some great books about Germany and a beautiful hot pink leather journal ( a great tool for keeping track of my experiences...maybe some of the things I don't want to post online!). We had a terrific lunch at the Paradise Bakery complete with delicious cookies.

I passed out the letters that I wrote them and asked them to open them at home. I had important things I wanted to share, but I was afraid of getting really upset by saying them out loud..so I wrote them down.

It was tough to say goodbye because these are women that I see more often and spend more time with than my own family. They have been my moms, my friends, and my mentors for the past three years and I will miss them dearly.

After our hugs and goodbyes I went to my school and met up with the teacher who is taking over my room. I showed her all of the curriculum stuff in the cabinets and what stuff is where. We spent some time talking about how things work in first grade and about what she might do in the room when she sets it up. One of the other first grade teachers I had lunch with had come to the school as well to work on setting up her calendar for next school year. When she was finished, she came in to say goodbye. I knew this was going to be the toughest one....

Linda was the first person from the school to reach out to me during the summer after I got my job. She took on the role as my official mentor and coached me through everything as I embarked on my first real teaching job. All three of the teachers I worked with were phenomenal and taught me different things about being a good teacher, but since Linda was the first one that I met, there was always a special connection. We sat in my classroom for about 45 minutes just talking...about the changes that are taking place in my life, about how exciting it will be...a little bit of everything. It wasn't sad, it was just nice. A conversation with a good friend and a great teacher. When we both realized we had to get home, we walked out to the parking lot together and she gave me a big hug. She started to cry and I knew that I was about to. I can hold up okay until the other person starts crying and then I lose it. I told her not to cry because I will be back to visit and it's not like I won't ever see her again. That seemed to make her feel better. It is pretty amazing to see experienced teachers, women with families, children, grandchildren and many life experiences crying because I am leaving. It makes me feel pretty proud of the co-worker and friend that I have been to them. It is a true reciprocal relationship that was special to each of us.

I will miss those three ladies so much, I can't even express it!

Can I be a nerd for a second?

I started my advanced educational psychology class yesterday and so far it's pretty good. The teacher just published a book on journal writing so she incorporates a lot of journaling into the class...totally up a blogger's alley right? Love it!

Another part of the class is book groups. She selected four texts and we each had to choose one that we wanted to read. Based on our choice, she assigned us to a group. We had to discuss with our group how much we want to read each night in order to finish the book by next week and create a project for the last class. We only have 8 classes total ( I heart summer school!) so everything is in fast forward. My group decided to read 2 chapters a night from our book Raising Cain which is about the "miseducation" of boys and how boys are not taught to properly understand and express emotions.

So yesterday after class, I came home and after blogging, checking email, dealing with craigslist people and selling my bookcase, I completed my homework assignment. Read two chapters and one article and did a journal exercise based on the article. Granted I do not have kids and I am not working during the summer and right now this is my only class...HOWEVER, if some of those things impacted my ability to take the class and complete the work, I would consider that before registering for the class.

When I got to class we met with our book groups for 30 minutes to discuss what we read. There are 5 people in my group and everyone but one other person had excuses about why they did not do the reading! I understand people have lives, but people..this is grad school! If you don't have time to do the work, why did you sign up for a class that costs roughly a thousand dollars??? This is not just about getting a credit and getting it over with, this is about bettering yourself and your teaching skills to help kids!

Since I had read and took notes (please see post title...nerd=me!) I started the conversation by reading some quotes to get other people talking. The conversation went fine and even though people had not read all of the chapters, they are still intelligent teachers who can talk about the subject.

All except one.....

One girl/woman said nothing. She texted on her phone while we talked about Raising Cain. Even when another group member said to her, "SO ____ do you have anything to add?" she looked up, said "No" and went back to looking at her phone. She contributed nothing!

Would you be mad or is it just me?

I am not a fan of working in groups sometimes, but mostly it is because of people like this who do not take responsibility for the work, don't contribute, and don't take it seriously. How is that fair to people who actually sign up for the course to learn something and take away new knowledge that might improve their teaching skills??

This person's excuse was that she takes another class right after this one that goes until 5 and then she drives far to get home. Ok, I understand that, but don't you need to take that into consideration when you register for classes? Yes, they are summer classes, so typically there is not as much work, but there is work and it needs to be done daily. I just don't get it.

I hope that she chooses to participate more in future sessions. I would never want to call her out on it, yet if she does it again, I might consider saying something to her.

Opinions??? If you think I am being a huge unreasonable nerd, please call me out on it. If you have had a similar experience please share! I heart comments!!

MckLinky Blog Hop

Hello blog hoppers! I am joining in the on MckLinky fun. I hope I am doing this the right way.....

Introducing Sneaker Teacher!!
I am a teacher and doctoral student who loves to blog about teaching, education, being a student, fitness and other happenings in my life. I taught first grade for the past three years, taught preschool in a bilingual Head Start before that and I am about to move to Germany with my husband in a few weeks where I will start work at an International school as a teacher assistant in the third grade. I hope you will follow my adventures as a teacher in a foreign country as I am sure it will be an exciting ride!

My favorite photo would have to be this one of my niece Alyssa. She is almost 6 months old and absolutely adorable. She lives in CT with her daddy ( my brother) and her mommy (my sister-in-law) and is basically the love of everyone's life. I got to see her when she was about 2 months old and I can't wait to see her again at the end of the month! She looks just like my brother did when he was a baby, but every once in awhile a photo captures her in a moment where I think she looks like me.

She is too cute!

Okay I have to add another photo because I also love this one. This is me trying to take my students to the bus on the last day of school. I have posted this picture before, but every time I look at it I smile because that was the longest best hug I have ever gotten! Shortly before this photo was taken some of my students told me to close my eyes while they wrote on the board in the classroom:

"We think you are the best teacher in the whole world!"

Friend Making Monday

I found this idea at Jen's blog and really liked it. I would never miss a chance to brag about my wonderful best friend(s).

Similar to many other people, I consider my husband my best friend. When you choose a life partner and you share every aspect of life, it is hard not to be best friends. Especially in recent weeks, dealing with our relocation to Germany, my husband has been so sweet and supportive I can't imagine what life would be like without him.

There is another special person in my life though that is my girly bff, my other soulmate for many reasons. Cristina and I met in college as we were placed together freshman year at Villanova. We both opted to be part of the "alcohol free" zone in the dorm which was a total blessing because the rest of the girls were paired alphabetically. With our last names starting with F and W, we never would have been together if it hadn't been for that choice.

Cristina's bridal shower 2007

We had only lived together for about a month or so before we decided to live together again the following year. Our bestfriendhood quickly blossomed as we discovered we loved living together and were totally in sync in many aspects. We lived together all four years in college and were pretty much inseparable.

Ever since college, we have not lived close to each other. I am in Oregon and she was in New Jersey and now in Virginia. It sucks living so far from your best friend because you miss out on the simple things like meeting for lunch, going to the movies, and shopping together (all things we did a lot in college, especially the shopping part). I can't call her up and have her come over on a Friday night to watch chick flicks and I can't cry on her shoulder or let her cry on mine when things are hard because we have such a distance that separates us.

I have realized though, that true friendship transcends physical distance. Even though I don't get to see her often, we talk on the phone every week and our connection is still as strong as ever. We have a way of relating to each other that is comfortable, consistent, and perfect. If I have something to complain about, she gets it. We think alike, can finish each other's sentences, and even though we are not close in distance, we are close in our hearts. We are on the same wavelength about most things and we just get each other in a way that tells me we will be friends forever.

My wedding August 18, 2007

Cristina's wedding September 8, 2007

Cristina was the Maid of Honor at my wedding and I was the Matron of Honor at hers a few weeks later. She is the most amazing friend and I love her with all my heart. She is thoughtful, she remembers to ask about things that are happening in my life and that are important to me, she sympathizes when I am sad and she celebrates when I am happy. She even laughs at my jokes which makes me adore her all the more.

I hope that someday, we can live closer. I would love to be able to take prego pics with her one day and have playdates with our kids. I would love to be able to go out for drinks when life offers things to celebrate and to have new adventures together like the ones we had in college. I know, however, that even if we are not in close proximity, we will always be the best of friends because we fit together in a way that I have not experienced with my other girlfriends. I am always a person who does not have a lot of friends, but the ones I have mean the world to me and provide me with quality relationships. Cristina is the best example of that. If I have exciting news, it is her that I call. If I am pissed off, it is her that I complain to. She is the best and I am so glad that fate brought us together 9 years ago.

I don't think I could ever do her justice in words, but I tried.

I heart Cristina!!!
