Experimentation

I feel like I am at a place in my teaching career where I am getting really tired of learning about how to be the best teacher I can be and then not letting that teacher shine through because I feel stifled by having to teach through a manual and stay on a pacing guide. Yes, routine has its place and it's great for kids, but I am kind of over it. I feel so rushed all the time and there is so little time for everything I have to do that I often don't even consider trying to think of something creative or innovative. I know you all feel it too, so I won't rant, but given these feelings, I have been trying to experiment with some different things in the classroom to really draw upon who the kids are and what they bring to the table instead of just teaching at them.

Each week we focus on a letter and do several activities related to that letter. One of the activities that we do is "letter looking" where we give the kiddos a poem that contains many words with our letter of the week and they go through the poem and highlight the letter of the week each time they come across it. I like this activity and it helps the kids recognize the letters, which is particularly good at the beginning of the year. Today, I decided to give this activity a little makeover and I want to share the results!

I started by gathering the kiddos in our reading circle and we read our "U book." We have letter books from Reading A to Z. They are simple books in the same format with four different images of things that start with each letter and simple sentences. Since our letter is U this week, I really felt it was important to start with that since there are not a ton of words beginning with U that are really relevant to the kids.

After we read the book, I had the kids go back to their table groups and take out their small whiteboards and markers. I asked them to write down 5 words they could think of that start with "U." This was challenging since U is a more random letter, yet I wanted them to have practice sounding out words as part of the activity. I gave them some time to write their words and then we started to create a group story. Instead of having them search for words within a poem that was already written, I set out to have them write their own! I sat at my laptop and projected the word document I was typing in on the big whiteboard. As I wrote, I asked the kiddos what should happen next and prompted them by describing certain words that start with U. The results differed a lot between the morning class and the afternoon class, but I wanted to share both of the stories :0)

Umberto and the Unicorn
By: Mrs. Sneaker's AM Kindergarten

One day Umberto found a unicorn under an umbrella. The unicorn was wearing underwear, so Umberto gave him a uniform. The unicorn really likes the Ducks, so Umberto gave him a University of Oregon uniform. Umberto tried to ride the unicorn, but the unicorn said it was unacceptable and he got mad. The unicorn flew up, up, up into universe so he could barely see the United States anymore. Umberto was so upset, he cried, but then he realized the umbrella was magical. He turned the umbrella upside down and the umbrella started to fly. He flew up, up, up into the universe and found the unicorn. Umberto said he was sorry for trying to ride on the unicorn and the unicorn forgave him. Then they flew together under the stars.

The End

Up Goes the Unicorn
By: Mrs. Sneaker’s PM Kindergarten

There was a unicorn and she found a mermaid under the water. Up the mermaid came and popped out of the water. She was cute. The unicorn was upset because the mermaid didn’t understand unicorn language because she only spoke mermaid language. The mermaid tied a balloon onto the unicorn and the unicorn went up, up, up into the universe.

The End

Cute, right? I think that doing the activity this way really allowed the kids to play a larger part and I also modeled the process of writing a creative story as well by thinking aloud as we came up with the story. After we wrote the stories, I used the highlight tool on my computer to highlight all the u's, so the original activity was embedded in what I did.

I am excited to see how this works when we do a letter that is a bit easier. After I read the story to the whole AM class, I told them I thought it needed some illustrations, so maybe it would be fun to have them do some drawings with captions tomorrow.

last hurrah

Ah, what a beautiful sight.

My last latte of spring break snuggled up next to my new (to me) ipad.

Mr. Sneaker has been anticipating the release of the ipad 2 pretty much since he purchased the original, so after I spent a nice little afternoon at home awaiting the FedEx truck to receive his new gem last week, he handed over his original ipad, which is now mine. His obsession with the newest/coolest technology usually leaves me with cool hand me downs! Originally, the first ipad was for me because the idea of storing books in this cute little package rather than lugging textbooks and books for my research from Germany to Portland and back was very appealing. Unfortunately, textbooks are not really available yet on ibooks and Mr. Sneaker became a bit too attached to "Patty" and was not ready to give her up when I moved back to PDX. I wasn't too torn up about it, but now that I am getting acquainted with how fun it is to play with Patty, I am in love. I downloaded some books and am having fun giving digital reading a try. I really feel far too attached to real books to forego them altogether, but I do like the idea of being able to travel without having so much luggage space hogged by my books. I am a heavy travel reader (meaning when I am on vaca I read a LOT) so I never travel without 2 or 3 books. This will make that load a bit lighter, but unfortunately I am not loving the first book I downloaded. It's not the digital reading that I dislike, but the book itself. Elegance of the Hedgehog is not sparking my interest...anyone read it? Please give me a reason to finish besides the fact that I spent 11.99 on it and don't want that to go to waste. I though digital books were supposed to be less expensive! I heard that it's awesome, but I am just not feeling it yet.

Anyway, here I sit with my latte and my ipad, enjoying the last day of spring break. Today marks one week left until my half marathon and I am super excited for the race next weekend. I am not super excited that I have my first weekend class of the term which means rising early on Saturday and I have to get up early for the 7:00 am start time of the race on Sunday, but hey, that's just how my crazy busy life rolls! My roomie and I ran a short 5 in the pouring down rain and wind this morning and despite feeling less than enthused, we rocked out the entire hill on the route that we previously struggled with when we first set out to start training for the half marathon. Our cute doggie joined us on the run as well! For the rest of the week I want to focus on yoga and pilates with maybe one more 5-6 mile run thrown in there somewhere. Since my class schedule has changed a bit, I will now have Wednesday evening open instead of being in class, so I am hoping that means I will get in more than 2-3 workouts each week.

The beginning of each new academic term always means a new beginning in many regards...I vow to exercise more, eat healthier, be über productive all the time, and spend a lot of free time writing. Let's hope all those things come to fruition! I am once again attempting to remove sugar from my diet, which is always a huge struggle for me. I am 2 days in and I can do fine if I am not tempted, but as soon as I am in front of chocolate, cookies, cake, candy etc, I usually cave. What really helps me is keeping a tally of how many days I have gone without sweets because I see the number increasing and never want to break the streak! We'll see how far I get this time. In 2009, I made it over 100 days.

Have you heard this song?
It is totally reminding me of my last night with Mr. Sneaker before we parted again for another 3 months.
::sniff sniff::

Good Times

I have been MIA for the past several days because I have just been enjoying life. I had a wonderful, but short, visit with Mr. Sneaker. We relaxed, ate lots of good food, and reveled in our time to actually feel like a married couple again! On Tuesday, we spent the day working/cleaning at our house which is currently in between renters, and then enjoyed a long, luxurious foot treatment at a local place called The Barefoot Sage. The prices and the treatments are quite indulgent, so we only treat ourselves to a date there every once in awhile. Since we didn't spend either our anniversary or Valentine's Day together this year, we felt like we deserved to spoil ourselves a little. We each got a 30 minute foot bath, a 30 minute foot massage, and a paraffin dip at the end. We sat on a comfy sofa, sipped on hot tea, and fell asleep as we soaked in the pampering. I can't tell you how relaxed I felt. The feet are connected to absolutely everything in the body because it made me feel SO great. We followed that awesomeness by a fabulous dinner at a restaurant called Clyde Commons. Delish! It was such a fun evening and I loved being with my cute hubs. I only wish we could have more time together! It was nice to know that this will be the last 3-month stretch that we will be apart.

It has been wonderful remembering what free time feels like this week. I have read for pleasure, slept late, watched TV, and just felt more human than I have in a long time. Classes start again on Wednesday, so I am already mentally gearing up for another term. One more crazy term and then I am DONE with my required courses. Yay! I feel like I should start editing my core paper and reading more for my specialty paper, yet I am having a little too much fun with my free time and I think I deserve to just wait until spring term has officially started.

Right now I am watching the movie Burlesque and it is making me miss dancing so much--the costumes, the makeup, the routines--not that I was ever that kind of dancer...but I swear in another life I was a performer of some kind because I have this deep passion for musicals and dance performances. I never got into theater in school because I can't sing, but I absolutely loved the few plays that I was in. The dancing part is totally my thing, but being a good singer is kind of a big part of being in musicals so I never got to really live out the dream of singing and dancing on stage. Oh well. I can live vicariously through Christina Aguilera. (And I must say, she looks a lot better in this movie than she is looking in recent pics).

1 more glorious day of spring break to enjoy until it's back to the grind...

Friend Makin' Monday

Since I am officially on Spring break and I am currently sitting on the couch next to the very cute and actually physically with me Mr. Sneaker, I am going to keep it light and participate in Friend Makin' Monday! I am trying to be officially work/school/teacher free for the week, so my posts may not be too educationally inspiring. I am counting down to my 600th post! Only 9 more to go, so I guess that means I need to make them good!

1. Who is your pick for the Final Four?

Wow, this is a tough one. Villanova is my team, but they are already out, so.... I don't really have an answer. Lame, I know.

2. What is your favorite workout/fitness activity?
Lately it's been running. I did 11 miles early this morning with my awesome running group. Our half marathon is just about three weeks away! I am also a big fan of pilates. I go through phases where I really focus on one kind of workout for awhile and then eventually I need to switch it up and focus on something else. Right now I have been seriously neglecting any kind of toning or weight lifting in order to train for the half marathon. Not to mention my workouts in general have been lacking because I have been so busy with trying to finish everything up for the end of winter term.

3. Do you have a favorite healthy snack? Something that REALLY hits the
spot?
hands down peanut butter and banana. Love it! It fills me up, gives me energy, keeps me fueled, and never leaves me feeling like I hate too much.

4. What is your dream car?
I LOVED my Saturn Vue, but we sold it when we moved to Germany. I don't really have a dream car, but I really like Jeeps and I have kind of always wanted to drive a pickup truck.

5. Have you set any goals for yourself this month? What are they?
My goal for this month (well, actually next month) is to successfully defend my core paper! I turned in my first complete draft last week and got good feedback, so after some editing and rewriting, I am hoping to defend sometime in April!

Today's highlights:
-spending time with hubs
-getting my Donorschoose project posted and already receiving 125 dollars in donations (in just one afternoon!) Linking the site to facebook was an awesome move!
-lovely sushi dinner with my favorite Godzilla roll
-running the farthest I have ever run in my entire life!

woot woot!

sigh

of

relief!

Adios to the most difficult three months of my life! Winter term was SO hard and I am so glad that it is behind me. I will have the same course load next term, yet I don't think it will be as tough....fingers crossed.

Today was the second day of student-led conferences and they went well, but I didn't get a break all day despite having blocked out 30 minutes for lunch and another 30 minutes for planning time. Since the kids did most of the work, I did get some planning and organizing done in between talking with parents, but I would have loved to have a good solid hour to myself and that just didn't happen. It was so fun watching my students lead activities with their parents and mimic some of the things I say and do in class. My little darling Dianita was absolutely PRECIOUS going through the activities with her mom. I cannot even express how much I adore that little cutie pie. Her smile was huge and she was so proud of herself.

I thought I would be done at 4:00, but my last scheduled conference went long and ended at 4:30. Then, a parent who was supposed to come yesterday showed up without her daughter just as I was about to leave, so I spent some time talking with her even though I needed to leave for class. I would never turn a parent away, but I ended up leaving a lot later than I had planned and then got stuck in traffic, so I wasn't able to get my favorite sushi dinner before class. No time for lunch...no time for dinner....geez!

We have one more half day of math training tomorrow and then I am seeing one more family for a conference before I am officially on spring break! I have nothing on my plate (yet a lot of little things I need to do to get ready for hubs). I have a date with Jilly tomorrow night and I feel like I haven't seen her in FOREVER.  I am totally ready for some well deserved relaxation and shopping!

Student Led Conferences

I just had my first experience with student-led conferences and despite the fact that I am feeling totally wiped out, I thought they were really cool. I never thought of having students take charge during conferences because I have always taught pretty young kiddos, but my teammates do it, so I tried it out. For our spring conferences we have a choice of doing an open house style arrangement or to just conference with families that we feel we really need to speak with--we are not required to conference with everyone like we are in the fall. Although there are many families who I don't feel like I have to talk with, due to their sweet kiddos being rockstars at Kindergarten, I think every family deserves some face time with the teacher and I think it's really important to establish that precedent in Kindergarten. I also think it's important to talk to the parents of kids who are doing great because it's just as important for them to hear that as it is to discuss challenges with parents.

Our conferences consisted of stations and three families attending at once. The kids got a list and they have to visit each station (in any order). Our stations were:

sight words
reading books
Fast Track phonics
teen numbers
number partners
journals
patterns
making numbers
talk to the teacher

Overall, I really liked the process, but here are some thoughts:
the good
  • parents get to see their kids in action and how they are doing with the activities rather than just hearing me talk about their kids
  • I can "meet" with 3 or 4 families at once (which really is a time saver considering I have 43 students
  • Parents can see when kids struggle, so I don't have to "break the news"
  • Parents are more involved
  • Kids have to come and take part in the conference instead of staying home
  • I have more flexibility to move around and use the bathroom during conferences if needed
  • I can see parents interact with their kids while they rotate through stations
the not so good
  • Despite the schedule and indication that the conferences should last 30 minutes, some families stayed a long time. I intended to only have three families per time slot, but at one point I think I had six or seven families in the room and people ended up waiting for station and waiting to talk to me. I just let them do their thing, but it got crowded....
  • Again, despite the schedule, I ended up staying 45 minutes longer than I planned talking with parents (today I didn't have anything else to do, but this could be an issue Thursday bc I have to leave for class right after my last conference and I don't want to rush anyone out the door)
  • If a family has to cancel (like for a sick kid), it's hard to re-create student-led conferences at a later time.
I was at school for 12 hours today, so I am feeling pretty exhausted. I was planning on going to the gym, but I am not really up for it....Maybe I will just read instead. I got three new books yesterday and I already finished Teaching Phonics Today. It was pretty short, but a great resource for a paper I need to start writing because it gave a great historical perspective on reading instruction.

I feel like I knew a lot of the information about phonics instruction, yet I also learned a lot too. I didn't really know much about how reading has been taught over the years and how/when instructional styles changed. I always hear that it's a pendulum that swings, but at least for my paper, it is really good to know how instruction changed, when, and what the research was behind the changes.

We'll see if I have time to read these over break. I will be enjoying time with Mr. Sneaker, so I may not get to them, but I am excited to read them as well. I have SO many teachery books that I just can't wait to read, but it's hard to find extra time for reading on top of what I read for my courses and what I read for book club. I guess I will have to catch up over the summer. I think back to how much I got to read for pleasure when I worked part time in Germany and I am jealous because that just doesn't happen anymore!
